To swim or not to swim?

Have you been considering adding swimming into your exercise routine? As summer approaches, swimming becomes a key part of my fitness regime – I love a cooling dip in the outdoor pool at my gym and there’s so many reasons why!

If you’re interested in swimming for fitness, but need some fab gear for your new hobby, then check out Tyr – who have a brilliant range of leisure and performance swimwear. My favourite pieces are below! I usually opt for a swimsuit when I’m swimming for exercise (rather than just chilling in the hot tub!) but I really love the sporty bikini set – it’s a fab way to get the support you need and show off that toned tummy! First and foremost, it’s important to make sure you feel comfortable with your outfit before trying a new workout. If I go to the gym in an outfit I feel self conscious in, I spend more time worrying about what I look like than actually working out – it’s the same with swimming. Get yourself some supportive and practical swimwear that makes you feel good and you’ll be excited to go swimming and show it off!

Why is swimming so good for you? Well, a gentle swim burns more than double the calories than walking, and can often overtake calorie burn for running or cycling too!

It’s not all about calories though, I personally love swimming because it’s practically no impact – which is great for those with bad joints or who are recovering from injury! And it’s a full body workout…I usually opt for breaststroke, and you can really feel your whole body working hard to keep you moving! Because of my chronic illness journey, and the ankle injury I’ve been battling over the past year, I really value the importance of a low impact workout! Some studies have even shown that Fibromyalgia symptoms decrease with swimming!

It may sound odd, but another reason that I love swimming is that you don’t have to worry about overheating or looking sweaty. The water really helps keep you cool and disguises any sweat, which is great if you’re just getting into exercise and feeling a little self conscious! At a swimming pool (in my experience), there’s always a good mix of ages and abilities. Yes, there may be a few Daniel Craig types looking very buff and macho doing front crawl faster than I can run, but there’s also Doris who’s 82 and just having a leisurely swim…or a little toddler with arm bands, taking their first dip! Even though walking around in a swimsuit may seem daunting to some at first, the mix of people and the laid back environment is bound to put you at ease. Unlike being in the gym, where there can often be a competitive vibe, swimming is about setting your own pace and just getting on with it!

What do you think about swimming? Have you tried incorporating it into your fitness routine? Let me know in the comments!

I love swimming! I used to go every week but my training for runs got in the way, definitely want to get back into it, one of my favourite forms of exercise to do and this swimwear looks great xxx
